"Hiram Martin had a hard battle, it was back and forth," said Edmonds-Woodway head coach Brian Alfi. "But he put (his opponent) on his back and never let him up. It really set the tone for the rest of the night."
Martin's pin was the first of five on the night for an Edmonds-Woodway squad that was missing a few of its usual starters due to illness according to Alfi.
Mariner actually took a 9-6 lead after Ali Mehdi recorded a pin at 152-pounds and the Maruaders were down 18-17 after a technical fall victory by Tommy Duong (182) and Daniel Huynh's 6-2 decision win at 195-pounds.
But after a Warriors' forfeit win, pins in three of the next four matches by Edmonds-Woodway stalwarts George Johanson (285), Gabe Baltazar (106) and Noah Cuzzetto (120) ensured the dual meet win.
"Gabe Baltazar has hit his stride," said Alfi. "He's been picking up big points and came through with a pin. Noah Cuzzetto and George Johanson have been about as automatic as you can get in dual meets right now. It's nice to have those guys in the lineup."
The meet's closest bout came at 145-pounds with Mariner's Andrew Villalobos facing off against the Warriors' Nathan Vulliet in match that Alfi and Mariner head coach Carl Wilkins arranged beforehand. Scoreless through the first three periods, Villalobos got a takedown to grab a 2-0 overtime win.
"It was a great match ... us coaches went out of our way to make sure they matched up," said Alfi. "Nathan just got stuck on the bottom and you can't make mistakes against Villalobos. The points were hard earned, both wrestlers are very physical and tough."
