Oak Harbor wrestling team topples Stanwood

OAK HARBOR — Needing a win in one of the final three matches of the night, Oak Harbor managed to pull off the victory when Jackson Constant pinned Stanwood’s Josh Smith 1 minute, 38 seconds into their 285-pound match, leading the Wildcats to a 43-36 win over their Wesco 3A North rival on Thursday night.

For the Wildcats the victory over the previously unbeaten Spartans came in front of a raucous crowd that were there to celebrate their squad on Senior Night.

“Tonight was by far the most exciting meet we’ve had all year,” said Oak Harbor assistant coach Larry Falcon. “It was a really loud atmosphere that reminded me of the old days of being in Snohomish (for their wrestling meets). That’s kinda what it felt like tonight, a lot of yelling. It was great!”

Despite the excitement of the matchup between the top two teams in the Wesco 3A North, Falcon noted that Thursday’s key 160-pound matchup — between the Wildcats Josh Crebbin and Zach Schut of Stanwood — was one that fans of both programs could very well be seeing again in the near future.

“Josh had an exciting match,” said Falcon. “I would say that his match with Zach was pretty hotly contested. Zach is a pretty tough kid, district wise. This is our regional competition. And I would say that (tonight’s) match could be the 160-pound finals at districts.”

The result of the contest for Thursday was a pin by Crebbin in 2:27.

Other matches of note included Jon Langingham of Oak Harbor pinning Nick Lewis in 2:53 at 182-pounds and the Spartans Anthony Ortega pinning CJ Shavers at 1:29 in the 170-pound matchup.

Adding to the atmosphere of Senior Night, the Wildcats’ wrestling team was awarded the Gary Knutzen award by the Skagit Island Officals for program sportsmanship.
