Suppose vice president Biden's committee came up with the following gun control recommendations:
Firearms may be purchased by citizens that were issued a "Firearm Purchase Permit" issued by the local police authorities and based on a background check.
Holders of a "Concealed Carry" permit, or a valid Hunting License, are not required to have an firearms purchase permit.
A hunting license authorizes its bearer to carry hunting weapons and handguns.
The carry permit must be in one's possession whenever a firearm is carried outside of one's dwelling, place of employment, place of business, or one's fenced property. The carry permit is not required when carrying a firearm for use at a police-approved rifle/handgun range.
Carry permits may be issued only to persons of trustworthiness, who can demonstrate a need for a permit. Carry permits may not be issued to:
•Persons under the age of 18
Legally incompetent or mentally retarded persons
Persons under mandatory police supervision (i.e. on parole)
Persons convicted of treason or known to be engaged in activities hostile to the state.Ÿ
Persons who have been imprisoned for more than two weeks in the past three years for any of: assault, trespass, breach of peace, resistance to authority, any misdemeanor or felony, or a hunting or fishing violation.
The above is a translation of the German Firearms Law, signed by Hitler on March 18, 1938. The current NRA propaganda that the first thing Hitler did was to confiscate all the firearms is to the contrary, the law actually made the acquisition and carrying of firearms easier. I was just a young boy during those years, but I clearly remember my grandfather having hunting rifles and shotguns and a pistol all during the war. The total confiscation of guns was carried out by the American troops immediately after the German surrender.
So, please, NRA and other gun enthusiasts: No one is going to take away your guns. Not even the likes of Hitler dared to do so. Do you really think the American government will (or can) ban guns? But how can the NRA, or anyone, be against reasonable laws to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and mentally disturbed people?
