Sewer rate to rise in Arlington

ARLINGTON -- Utilities customers won't see increases in their water bills this year. They can expect to pay $2 a month more for sewer service, though.
Arlington City Council in 2011 amended the municipal code to include mandatory annual rate increases for water and sewer to help pay for Arlington's $30 million water treatment plant.
However, in October, council members asked city officials to analyze whether the rate increases were actually needed for 2013.
It was determined that the water rate increase wasn't necessary, city spokeswoman Kristin Banfield said.
"This is a big deal and not just for residential rate payers," Banfield said. "Commercial and industrial customers get a break on increases, too."
The city has been diligent in obtaining grants and low-interest loans to help pay for the water reclamation facility, Banfield said. In addition, the city has built up its savings account for sewer and water service and has money in reserve that could cover infrastructure replacement, she said.
The Arlington City Council is scheduled to approve the rate changes at its meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, 110 S. Third St.
