Kenney’s shot leads Cedarcrest girls over Murphy

DUVALL — Susan Kenney made the game-winning basket with three seconds remaining, and Cedarcrest dealt Archbishop Murphy its first Cascade Conference loss of the season 50-49.

“We were down one with 26 seconds to go, we wanted the ball in the hands of Susan Kenney without question,” said Cedarcrest head coach Brad Knowles.

The Red Wolves ran a play and got the ball to Kenney with five seconds to go. She ran a reverse pivot in the middle of the key and took the shot. “She just drained it. Perfect,” said Knowles.

Cedarcrest overcame a 12-point deficit going into the fourth quarter aided by two back-to-back 3-pointers by Kailyn Campell.

“You just felt the momentum change on her 3s,” said Archbishop Murphy head coach Mark Bircher.

“Bottom line, there were a couple of costly turnovers and they made some big plays.”

Bircher also praised Kenney, saying she “willed their team.

“She is pretty tough. I thought we actually played pretty good defense on her. … I mean credit to her, she just made the play.”

Foul trouble may also have played a role in the unbalanced scoring during the second half.

“We took advantage of Campbell being out with foul trouble,” said Bircher of the third quarter in which Murphy outscored the Red Wolves 16-6. “Monti Cooper was out in the fourth quarter and the roles reversed a little bit.”

When the two teams met earlier in the season, the game came down to the wire as well. In that contest Archbishop Murphy came out on top 52-50

The win ties the Red Wolves with the Wildcats atop the conference standings at 10-1.

Kenney led scoring in the game with 19 points, including the game-winner. She also had four assists. Kailyn Campbell scored 13 for Cedarcrest and had eight rebounds. Beth Carlson had a double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds to pace the Wildcats.
