Yet the Tips came away with the unlikeliest of points.
Everett somehow got Wednesday's game against the Kamloops Blazers into overtime, despite allowing 69 shots on goal, as the Tips fell 4-3 in overtime.
Austin Lotz went overtime and then some in goal for Everett, finishing with 65 saves to smash the franchise record for stops in a game. The previous record was 55 by Kent Simpson last season. All 65 of Lotz's saves came in regulation as he came seven short of the WHL record of 72 saves in regulation, set by Chilliwack's Lucas Gore on Mar. 16, 2011.
While Lotz was spectacular, so was Everett's penalty killing, which killed off all 12 of Kamloops' advantage -- including a pair of lengthy five-on-threes -- and the Tips scored the tying goal in the third period while short-handed. Everett finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
However, the Tips were denied the full points when Kamloops' Chase Ully converted a penalty shot 1 minute, 17 seconds into overtime to win it for the Blazers.
Ully, Tim Bozon and JC Lipon scored in regulation for Kamloops (31-14-2-3). Cole Cheveldave earned the win in goal for the Blazers with 18 saves.
Reid Petryk, Mirco Mueller and Ryan Harrison scored for Everett (20-26-1-2), which had a three-game winning streak snapped.
The first period was one-way traffic. Kamloops put 29 shots on net, which was a new Everett franchise record for shots allowed in a period. However, Lotz was amazing, turning aside all 29, and Everett took a 2-0 lead despite being outshot 29-6.
The Tips got on the board with their first shot of the game at 4:00. On the power play, Petryk converted a one-timer on a feed from Landon Oslanski to give Everett a 1-0 lead. Mueller then made it 2-0 at 14:46, putting a slap shot through traffic and past Cheveldave off a faceoff win.
However, the shot differential caught up to the Tips in the second, when Kamloops outshot Everett 21-5 and found the net three times to take a 3-2 lead. Bozon got the Blazers on the board at 5:19, cutting across the goal and scoring around Lotz. Ully tied it at 13:58, putting in a rebound off the rush. Then Lipon gave Kamloops the lead a mere 16 seconds later, scoring on a rebound right after a face-off win.
Everett was forced to kill penalties for much of the third, but the Tips scored short-handed at 5:40 when Harrison scored off the rush.
The Tips made it to OT to earn their point, but Ully was given a penalty shot when he was brought down from behind by Ben Betker, and Ully scored with a move to his backhand to end it.
