But this time the Tips found a way to prevail.
Everett scored twice 1 minute, 13 seconds apart midway through the third period, and the Tips received another strong effort from goaltender Austin Lotz as Everett came from behind to defeat the Prince George Cougars 3-2 Friday night.
Kohl Bauml scored twice, including the goal that broke the 2-2 tie. Then Lotz, coming off a franchise-record 65-save performance in Wednesday's 4-3 overtime loss at Kamloops, made the lead hold up. Lotz finished with 40 saves as Everett was outshot 42-22.
Manraj Hayer scored the other goal for Everett (21-26-1-2), which further distanced itself from Prince George in the Western Conference standings. The Cougars, who are in ninth place and would be the first team out of the playoffs, now trail the seventh-place Tips by 11 points.
Troy Bourke and Rinalds Rosinskis scored for Prince George (14-28-2-4). Brett Zarowny made 19 saves in net for the Cougars.
The same two teams play again tonight in Prince George.
Everett trailed 2-1 going into the third period, and the Cougars had the momentum. But the Tips changed the game with two quick strikes to take the lead. Hayer tied it at 9:43 when he was found all alone in front by Joshua Winquist, then made a move around Zarowny to make it 2-2. Then 1:13 later Bauml put a slap shot in transition past Zarowny to give the Tips the lead.
Prince George had chances at the end as Everett took two penalties and the Cougars pulled Zarowny for an extra attacker, making it a six-on-three. But the Tips survived. Everett had its second straight strong penalty-killing effort, holding Prince George 0-for-5 two days after holding Kamloops 0-for-12.
Everett opened the scoring 5:44 into the game. While skating four-on-four, Bauml blasted home a shot off the rush on a feed from Ty Mappin, giving the Tips a 1-0 lead. Prince George came on strong later in the period, but Lotz made a series of saves to preserve Everett's 1-0 lead.
Prince George carried that momentum into the second period, and two goals in 24 seconds gave the Cougars the lead. Bourke tied it up at 12:34 when he tapped in a rebound off the rush. Then at 12:58 Rosinskis drove a long rebound from the point past a wrong-footed Lotz, making it 2-1. Both teams had the puck in the net later in the period, only to have the goals waived off.
