Out-sourcing costly in long run

In an article "Boeing CEO's job may be on line in 787 probe," it was reported that 70 percent of the Dreamliner would be designed and built by suppliers around the world. (Emphasis supplied.) That bright idea was supposed to be a cost-saving measure.
What hasn't been reported so far is how much has Boeing saved by that process.
Or could Boeing really have saved money by having the work done at home? After all there really is no place like home. Buy American!
