Marysville School District Superintendent Larry Nyland plans to retire at the end of this school year.
Officials are asking parents of the district's 11,000 students, people in the community and organizations with partnerships with the school district to attend the meetings to learn more about the process of searching for, recruiting and hiring a new superintendent.
The meetings are to be held 7 p.m. Tuesday and 6 p.m. Thursday, both in the district's service center board room, 4220 80th St. NE.
The school board has hired Northwest Leadership Associates for $15,000 to assist in the search, but people who live in the school district are asked to assist the board in deciding what should be considered when interviewing candidates.
Nyland, 64, is finishing up his ninth year as the superintendent of the Marysville School District and his 42nd year as an educator. Nyland makes $165,690 a year.
He was hired as superintendent in the summer of 2004. The district had experienced a 49-day teacher strike in fall 2003 and enrollment numbers and district budgets were suffering. Since then, Nyland had a hand in increasing the graduation rate and urging voters to approve school levies and bonds that helped build Grove Elementary School and Marysville Getchell High School.
Nyland said he believes the district is in a good place for a new leader.
