On Thursday, Feb. 21, the Washington Stealth and the Everett Silvertips will team up to play a charity lacrosse game to benefit local youth hockey and lacrosse programs. The inaugural game will be played at 7 p.m. at Comcast Arena.
Players from the Silvertips and the Stealth will be divided into two teams and then play a lacrosse game. A rematch for next season, this time on the ice is already in the works.
One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the game will go to benefit local youth hockey and lacrosse organizations to fund new equipment, playing time and scholarship organizations.
The game will consist of four 10-minute quarters, five minutes shorter than normal National Lacrosse League quarters and will have a brief halftime intermission. After the game fans will get an opportunity to meet Stealth and Silvertips players on the Comcast Arena floor and the players will be available for autographs and photos.
“We are honored to join with Comcast Arena’s anchor tenant, the Everett Silvertips, who are celebrating their 10th year in the city, in giving back to the community through the inaugural Comcast Arena Classic,” Stealth president David Takata said. “We have always admired the Silvertips’ community spirit and have watched hockey blossom in the region with their presence.”
Hockey and lacrosse are two of the fastest growing sports in Washington state. Washington state participation in youth hockey ranks only behind Wisconsin and Alaska among the 31 U.S. states without NHL hockey and has grown about 250 percent in the past decade.
Lacrosse is growing at an extremely high-level in Washington state as well. There are about 10,000 lacrosse participants in the state and about 4,000 students playing at the high-school level.
