Those East Coasters have their groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, to predict how long winter will last.

But we have Snohomish Slew. Slew is a frog who is ready to go head-to-head against Phil as the best winter weather predictor, or at least the best weather predictor for the Pacific Northwest.

Will Slew predict spring's arrival in six weeks or will we have lots more winter? Attend GroundFrog Day on Saturday and find out.

There are lots of family friendly activities to do while you are waiting for Slew's prediction.

Children ages 3 to 8 can enter a coloring contest for a chance to win a pizza party. Families can also have their photos taken with Slew, or watch a frog jump (rope) contest, or watch as Slew introduces his newest friend, GroundFrog Day Rainbow Princess Amphibiana.

Then stand by and listen for Slew's weather frog-nostication. As an added bonus, Slew will also predict the outcome of Sunday's Super Bowl.

Can Punxsutawney do that? We didn't think so.

GroundFrog Day is presented by the city of Snohomish's Chamber of Commerce. In its eighth year, the festivities are meant to brighten up the winter doldrums and play off the Punxsutawney, Pa.'s Groundhog Day tradition.

GroundFrog Day activities run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Avenue A and First Street in downtown Snohomish. This is a free event. For more information go to www.groundfrogday.org.
