School security

Let's expand on sheriff's good idea

I, for one, would like to applaud Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick's proactive stance on making our schools safer for our children, as stated in Wednesday's Herald. ("Sheriff to assign 5 deputies for school security patrols.") While I agree that putting officers in the outlaying schools and even bringing back some retired officers to fill these positions is a sound one, I propose that we take it one step further.
There are many retirees in Snohomish county with the knowledge and experience in the safe handling of firearms that would love to volunteer their time to such a worthwhile cause. Of course these individuals would have to first undergo an extensive background check and receive the proper training in handling extreme situations, but the resources are there and I'm sure willing to provide back-up to the on duty officers, at little or no cost to the public, to insure the safety of our children. Let's face it, these gun-toting crazies that have been invading our schools are not going to go away; in fact, I believe it will continue to get worse as the next attacker tries to run up a higher score than his predecessor. I believe the only way to deal with them is with superior force. Would you feel safer sending your child to a school with a "gun free zone" sign in front of it, or one with an armed guard? The choice is a no-brainer for me.
I know these sound like extreme measures, but the reality is, we are living in extreme times and adding more gun control laws to law abiding citizens is not a positive approach to the problem, putting second thoughts into the heads of the would-be assassins is. It is my opinion that the only way to protect our children, is to defend them.
