Dispatchers initially received a report that shots had been fired on Spokane’s lower South Hill.
The Washington State Patrol said responding police officers saw a man in the area and chased him on foot. The man got into a vehicle and sped away, driving through several yards and fences.
The patrol said the vehicle eventually stopped in the parking lot of the Huckleberry’s grocery store. Troopers said shots were fired and the man was killed.
The Spokane County medical examiner later identified the man as Jacob Dorfman, 52, and said he died of gunshot wounds.
The patrol said no officers were injured, and a handgun was recovered at the scene.
