Prep boys basketball: Edmonds-Woodway 63, Monroe 51

EDMONDS — Devin Joseph hit a 3 at the buzzer to end the first half and put the Warriors up by seven and Monroe just couldn’t get back into the game as Edmonds-Woodway built a large lead in the third quarter and held onto most of it, finishing off the Bearcats 63-51 in a 4A District 1 Tournament first-round game.
"We had a great third-quarter run," said Warriors head coach Steve Call. "At one point I think were were up by 18."
The final margin wasn’t that big, but the 13-point lead the Warriors took into the fourth quarter proved enough. Once Edmonds-Woodway had built a lead, they did what they had to do.
"Playoff game. Grind it out," said Call. "Monroe played well. They came to play tonight."
The victory puts Edmonds-Woodway one win away from the championship game. To get there the Warriors have to get by Arlington, the No. 1 seed out of the North. Arlington and Edmonds-Woodway play at 8 p.m. on Friday at Glacier Peak H.S.
The Bearcats move to the consolation bracket, where three more wins earns them the right to play the No. 3 seed out of Kingco for a regionals berth. Their first hurdle comes when they host Mariner at 7 p.m. on Friday.
