SPOKANE VALLEY -- A coin toss determined the newest member of the Spokane Valley City Council.

The council was split 3-3 Tuesday night on filling a vacancy, so a coin flip made the choice between Rod Higgins and Linda June Thompson.

KREM reports Higgins won the toss and was sworn in.

He replaces Councilwoman Brenda Grassel, who moved outside the city. Higgins is a former planning commission member and will fill the city council seat until an election in November.
