Hobby model expo flies high at Monroe fairgrounds

Sign up for Weekend to-do list
The Northwest Model Hobby Expo, a must-attend events for hobbyists, is to be held this weekend at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds.

The expo includes demonstrations and a swap meet with remote-controlled airplanes, cars, boats and helicopters.

There will be sessions of "Battle Bots" and tank battles every two hours, with prizes.

This year's expo packs lots of extras like a boat pond for remote-controlled boats.

The Indoor Fun Fly will feature monitored open flying of hobby planes over a 50-by-50-foot caged area about 18 feet high. There is expected to be at least one buddy box system in place so newcomers can experience the sport of indoor flying.

This is an Academy of Model Aeronautics Sanctioned event and AMA membership is a prerequisite, but you can sign up there.

Fees for the Fun Fly are $2 for single-day flying, $5 for weekend flying or $7 for the whole family. Registration is suggested.

The expo runs from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, 14405 179th Ave. SE, Monroe.

Admission is $12 Friday; $10 Saturday and $7 Sunday, free for kids 10 and under; $5 with military ID any day. Go to www.NWMHE.com.
