The Tips are struggling mightily on offense.
Everett hasn't exactly been an offensive juggernaut this season. However, things have gone particularly dry during the current six-game losing streak. Everett has found the net just four times in those six games. The Tips are now at the bottom of the league in goals with a mere 132 in 56 games, an average of 2.36 per contest.
The Tips had their chances, particularly during a five-on-three (see below), but it seems confidence is low when scoring chances present themselves. And once the Hitmen got a bit of a lead, the Tips weren't able to threaten much.
This game also sounded a little like a high school baseball game, what with all the pinging. The teams combined to draw iron at least six times. At least five times it happened at the east end as that goal just didn't seem interested in being scored on for most of the night.
Seattle lost to Red Deer and Prince George beat Vancouver, meaning the seventh-place Tips remained four points ahead of Seattle, while Prince George narrowed the gap to five. We've got ourselves another horserace to the finish line, ladies and gentlemen.
With the score tied 1-1 early in the second period, Everett received a full two mintues of five-on-three. The Tips had all kinds of scoring chances, but Landon Oslanski's shot went off the inside of the post, and Reid Petryk missed an open net three times on one-timers at the far post. Calgary survived and scored twice in the next six minutes to take control.
First star: Pavlo Padakin, Calgary. One goal and two assists, tenacious in the offensive zone.
Second star: Spencer Humphries, Calgary. One goal and one assist, also impenetrable in the defensive zone.
Third star: Victor Rask, Calgary. Two assists, strong on the puck.
The Herald's honorable mention: Alex Roach, Calgary. One crossbar, one post, dangerous from the blue line.
Calgary 5, Everett 1
