Model planes, Ed Asner, film fest, more weekend fun

Catch a movie: The Everett Film Festival is Friday and Saturday. The gala and wine tasting is Friday and films run on Friday and Saturday. Read the details in our story here.

Meet FDR: Well, kinda. Ed Asner will present a solo performance Saturday at the Edmonds Center for the Arts, exploring President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s life and the events that helped frame history. Read about it in our story here.

Small scale on a big scale: The Northwest Model Hobby Expo is Saturday and Sunday at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. The expo includes demonstrations and a swap meet with remote-controlled airplanes, cars, boats and helicopters. The Indoor Fun Fly will feature monitored open flying of hobby planes over a 50-by-50-foot caged area about 18 feet high. There is expected to be at least one buddy box system in place so newcomers can experience the sport of indoor flying. Read more here.

For bird lovers: A photographic exhibit exploring the intertwined lives of owls and woodpeckers is on display at Edmonds Historical Museum. The exhibit features 15 photographic prints of owl and woodpecker species found in the Pacific Northwest, together with text panels and vivid birdcalls and drumming sound recordings. More for bird lovers: The Edison Bird Festival is Saturday and Sunday. The event includes birding trips, live bird presentations, a chicken parade, arts shows and instructions and a lot more. Find details here.

For chocolate lovers: The shops at Country Village will hold a chocolate tasting from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday. More than a dozen merchants will feature samples of their favorite chocolates and treats. Other offerings include gluten-free chocolate tortes, chocolate bites, triple chocolate brownies, healthy chocolates, M&M variety tasting and raspberry cordials. Find the details here.

For rock hounds: The Sweetheart of Gems Rock, Gem and Mineral Show is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Oak Harbor Senior Center, 51 SE Jerome St., Oak Harbor. Admission is free.

For animal lovers: The way to an animal’s heart might be through its stomach so the zoo is treating its otters, red pandas, snow leopards, gorillas and other animals to heart-shaped ice pops made of fruit juice, honey, strawberries and cranberries, herbal bouquets and heart-shaped steaks, to help stimulate them and keep the human audience engaged. The event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. More details at www.zoo.org.

For theater lovers: “Wild Dust,” a tale set in the 1800s begins with the worst dust storm about to hit a small western town. It’s so bad that the men have to drive the cattle to safe territory, leaving the women on their own. That’s when the fur starts to fly. The play opens Friday in Edmonds and also shows Saturday and Sunday. All the details are here.

For food lovers: Seattle chef Tom Douglas will trek to Everett on Saturday to sign copies of “The Dahlia Bakery Cookbook.” The books will be on sale during the event for 20 percent off. There will also be goodies to taste. Read more in our story here.
