Sen. Shin introduces bills to improve access to higher ed
Democratic State Sen. Paull Shin has introduced two bills to improve access to higher education, one to allow military members serving at Washington bases to pay in-state tuition at Washington colleges and universities and another to help disabled students attend college.
The first bill would allow veterans who are honorably discharged, as well as their spouses and children, to qualify for in-state tuition rates at post-secondary institutions in Washington state within one year of their separation from military service.
The second would start a task force to help disabled students make a smooth transition from high school to college and other post-secondary education.
The Senate committee on higher education has held hearings on both bills. The committee is scheduled to discuss the bill to help disabled students at an executive session Tuesday. The committee has no further action scheduled on the veterans' tuition bill.
Shin, who serves in the Senate as vice president pro tem, represents the 21st Legislative District, including most of Edmonds, all of Mukilteo and part of south Everett.
