Prep girls basketball: Shorewood 54, Ferndale 52

SHORELINE -- Ferndale missed what would have been a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Thunderbirds move on to the consolation final of the 3A District 1 Tournament. Masha Shtikel and Angel Tulee led on offense for Shorewood, scoring 20 and 15 points respectively and combining for six 3s. That offensive power helped the Thunderbirds to an 11-point lead at the end of three quarters. A lead that had dwindled to one with 19 seconds to go.
At that point, Ferndale had the ball, but the Thundrebirds forced a turnover. Gabby Hagar came up with the ball and Ferndale fouled her with nine seconds left. Hagar hit one-of-two. Ferndale came down to shoot, but missed the final 3-pointer at the buzzer and surrendered the loser-out contest.
The Thunderbirds' final hurdle to advance to regionals is Stanwood and the two teams meet 6 p.m. Friday at Lynnwood H.S.
