Brier: Disaster preparedness class
The Emergency Services Coordinating Agency in Brier is offering disaster preparedness classes to Snohomish and King county residents.
CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training is about keeping yourself and your family safe and assisting others until help arrives.
Professional first responders, emergency managers and CERT instructors teach students to extinguish small fires, provide life-saving first aid, conduct urban search and rescue, and perform other vital skills needed after a disaster. The first class session is to be held from 7-10 p.m. Feb. 21 and the course continues over eight consecutive Thursday nights. The last class on April 11 is a disaster simulation for students to practice what they have learned.
Classes will be held at Brier City Hall, 2901 228th St. SW.

Coupeville: Health hero nominations
The Community Health Advisory Board is seeking nominations for the 12th Annual Linda Lee Martens Community Health Hero Award. This recognition program will be held at the Coupeville Performance Center at 5 p.m. May 14 at a public meeting of a joint special session of the Island County Board of Health and the advisory board. Lynnwood: Concert for Valentine's Day
The Edmonds Community College Jazz Band and Combo plans to present "Jazz for Lovers: A Valentine's Day Concert" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the college's Black Box Theatre, 20000 68th Avenue W.
The show features two sets of music celebrating songs of love, featuring instrumental soloists and vocalists with both groups.
Highlights include arrangements by Nelson Riddle and classics from the big band era such as "String of Pearls" and "Moonlight Serenade."
The Edmonds CC Jazz Band is an auditioned ensemble that performs on campus and throughout the Northwest. They participate in local festivals including the Edmonds Jazz Connection and their Jazz Festival on the EdCC campus.
Tickets: $7 general admission. Free for students (show Edmonds CC ID at the door). Tickets available online or at the door.

Terrace: Free personal defense seminar
Learn the best practices for protecting yourself and your family at a free seminar, 6 to 9 p.m. March 28 at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23308 58th Ave. W.
The Mountlake Terrace Police Department event will cover personal safety, firearms and other defense options. Topics include a pyramid of personal awareness, pre-incident indicators, do's and don'ts on confronting criminals, deadly force encounters, shoot or don't shoot decisions, family emergency planning and firearms options and personal defense equipment.
Sgt. Pat Lowe, a 17-year law enforcement officer and certified firearms instructor, will lead the seminar. Seating is limited. To reserve a spot, contact Officer Kim Berg at kberg@ci.mlt.wa.us or 425-670-8260.
