MILL CREEK — It took the Glacier Peak boys basketball team a little while to get going on the offensive end but once it did it hit its stride.
After scoring just four points in the second quarter, Glacier Peak scored 37 in the second half to beat Oak Harbor in the 3A District 1 third-place game at Jackson H.S. on Saturday night.
“It was kind of a tale of two halves,” said Glacier Peak head coach Brian Hunter. “It took us a little while to get going. Offensively we struggled a little bit early, but our defense kept us in the game.”
Defensively Glacier Peak held Oak Harbor to single digits in each of the first three quarters.
Glacier Peak advances to a 4 p.m. regional game next Saturday at Bellevue Community College against Rainier Beach game. It’s the second season in a row that the Grizzlies must face Rainier Beach at Bellevue College in the regionals.
“We’re excited,” Hunter said. “It’s definitely not something you should ever take for granted or take lightly. But this is our fourth year in a row to qualify for the state tournament, and we’re the only team in Wesco 3A that can say that.
“Every graduating senior we’ve had has ended his career at the state tournament. And that’s phenomenal. It’s just an unbelievable accomplishment for these kids.”
Glacier Peak’s Zach Pederson led all scorers with 20 points and Ramsey Rosales hit five 3-pointers to end up with 15.
Drew Washington led Oak Harbor with 16 points.
