MOUNT VERNON -- It was a game that Cedarcrest head coach Brad Knowles believed never should have been scheduled, but his Red Wolves won it anyway.
Susan Kenney scored 13 points, including a 3-pointer from halfcourt to close out the first half, as Cedarcrest downed Archbishop Murphy 56-50 to capture second place at the 2A District 1/2 girls basketball tournament.
The game, which determined the second and third seeds for regionals, was a product of the 2A tournament's unique structure. It was necessary since the Red Wolves and the Wildcats had not played each other in the tourney. However, Knowles is not a fan of the setup, which none of the other classifications use.
"We were not in favor of it. It's extra expense and more wear and tear," said Knowles. "It's just a format that no one does. (I think) it came from the Northwest Conference, it was more their idea. . .it was our third game in six days and (Murphy's) fourth (in six) for a game that probably shouldn't have taken place. We won the first two games (of the tournament), we made the championship game, we should be second. . ."
Kailyn Campbell led Cedarcrest with 16 points, while Kalee Fowler had 13 and Kenney, the Red Wolves' point guard, led the team with eight rebounds. Kenney's buzzer-beating 3 also gave the Red Wolves "a big boost" according to Knowles.
The halfcourt shot put Cedarcrest up by five at intermission and the Red Wolves rode that momentum into the third to extend its lead to 10 heading into the final period.
"We knew (the third) was important," said Knowles, "We played better D and were more efficient on offense," said Knowles.
Wildcat post Beth Carlson had her usual strong game with 16 points and 19 rebounds. Madison Pollock scored 11 and MaireMichael Carroll and Anna Maher each had 10 points, with Maher adding 12 rebounds and five assists.
With the win, Cedarcrest advances to play Port Angeles at Lynden H.S, while Archbishop Murphy will travel to Tumwater H.S. to face W.F. West. Both winner-to-state/loser-out games are scheduled for 6 p.m on Friday.
