Mariners trade Carp to Boston

The Mariners designated Mike Carp for assignment last week when they signed Joe Saunders, so this is hardly surprising news, but the team announced Wednesday that Carp has been traded to Boston for a player to be named later or cash considerations or a ham sandwich (OK, that last one isn't true, just pointing out that this trade isn't going to bring any big rewards to the Mariners).

Carp, 26, came to Seattle in a trade after the 2008 season, and over the last four seasons he hit .255 with 18 home runs and 28 doubles in 545 at bats. Carp was going to have a hard time finding a role in Seattle this season, as the Mariners have a glut of first-base/corner-outfield/DH types.
