Overnight bridge closures planned for Highway 529

EVERETT -- Drivers traveling at night starting Sunday from Marysville to Everett won't be able to use Highway 529 across the Snohomish River.
The drawbridge on southbound Highway 529, on the Everett side of the river delta, will be closed for several nights Sunday through Wednesday for inspection, according to the state Department of Transportation. The closures are scheduled for 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. The northbound side will remain open.
Drivers headed south through Marysville will be detoured by signs to I-5. Drivers still will be able to use Highway 529 to reach Smith and Spencer islands.
The 59-year-old drawbridge carries about 15,000 cars and trucks per day, said Kris Olsen, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation.
The bridge will have to be open for long periods during the inspections, according to the transportation department.
The companion bridge on the northbound side, 85 years old, was closed for repairs from Dec. 1 to Dec. 4 after a 37-year-old Everett woman crashed her SUV into the bridge's support beams.
She was arrested for investigation of drunken driving, attempting to elude police, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.
