Tough questions needed on dam

Thank you for the article about upcoming Snohomish County PUD public meetings on Wednesday and Thursday to unveil plans to dam the Skykomish River at Sunset Falls. PUD employees are clearly excited about the possibility of building a new dam and are strongly advocating this project to their board of commissioners and other elected officials. Missing from PUD's presentation are viable alternatives, frank discussion of the environmental risks, worst-case scenarios and plans to remedy problems if they occur.
On its other projects, PUD has "adaptive recovery plans" to remove any system that causes environmental harm, but how could they ever undo the hundreds of millions of tons of granite to be blasted from Sunset Falls? Hopefully, the PUD Commissioners and the public are going to look past the current PUD sales pitch and ask the difficult questions necessary to make a sound policy decision about Sunset Falls. Lessons learned from WPPSS and Enron must be applied to the Sunset Falls decision-making process so that similar previous mistakes are not repeated.
