Special election needed for office

"Here's what we know is broken: trust in county government." That one line in Julie Muhlstein's Friday column about the Reardon debacle is, to me, the key point in the matter.
How can the County Council, or anyone else, even think of allowing Reardon to resign May 31? He should be forced out immediately. Trust in government does not include allowing Reardon to leave, according to the main Herald piece several days ago, after it is too late for a special election. Is permitting some series of closed door meetings between political "hacks" to select the new county executive enhancing "trust in county government?" Someone handpicked by politicians (and perhaps other questionable groups) to serve over a year before facing the voter is a further indication of the cancer which is not too far from the surface in this entire matter.
We would look for some reasoned voices to be raised in outrage at the intended ploy of Reardon, and the politicians behind him, to continue to discount the intelligence of the voters.
