Everett rallied within one goal in the third period against the WHL-leading Portland Winterhawks on Tuesday night, but the Tips couldn't finish it off as Portland earned revenge with a 6-3 victory.
Everett upset Portland, which has the league's best record, 4-2 Saturday at Comcast Arena. Then, after falling behind 3-0, the Tips pulled within 4-3 midway through the third period.
However, Portland's Ty Rattie scored just 21 seconds after Everett pulled within one to wrest back control for the Winterhawks. Then when the Tips received a full two minutes of five-on-three late in the game, the Winterhawks killed it off before Rattie iced it with a late empty netter.
Seth Jones also scored twice, Chase De Leo and Nicolas Petan also scored, and Mac Carruth made 31 saves in net for Portland (52-12-1-2), which snapped a three-game losing streak. A dominant first period, in which the Winterhawks outshot the Tips 22-8 and took a 3-0 lead, proved the difference.
Landon Oslanski scored twice and Ryan Harrison also scored for Everett (23-37-2-4), which had an 8-2 advantage in power plays. Daniel Cotton made 37 saves in net for the Tips. Austin Lotz added three saves in the third period when Cotton briefly went to the bench after being shaken up on Rattie's first goal.
Everett remained tied with idle Seattle for seventh place in the Western Conference. Ninth-place Prince George beat Tri-City 3-0 to pull within six points of the Tips and T-birds.
Everett found itself down 4-1 early in the third when Petan went coast to coast and scored on a wraparound 2 minutes, 12 seconds into the third.
But the Tips rallied. Oslanski scored his second power-play goal of the game, putting a slap shot through traffic at 4:31. Then Harrison put in his own blocked shot at 12:53 after a nice passing move in transition, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
However, on the following shift, the Tips turned the puck over on an odd-man rush. The Winterhawks quickly moved the puck the other direction, and Rattie was able to get behind the defense and score past Cotton to restore Portland's two-goal advantage.
Then with 3:00 remaining the Tips were awarded a full two minutes of five-on-three. But Carruth made several good saves to prevent another comeback attempt.
