SPOKANE — The Everett Silvertips had their chance Friday night, but they shot themselves in the foot.
Everett doomed itself with a string of bad penalties in the third period, and the Tips fell 6-3 to the Spokane Chiefs.
Alessio Bertaggia scored two of his three goals in the third period as Spokane took full advantage of Everett’s lack of discipline.
The score was tied 3-3 going into the third, but the Tips handed Spokane back-to-back five-on-three power plays early in the period, allowing the Chiefs to take the lead. Then another penalty with less than three minutes remaining took away Everett’s last chance to get the tying goal. Spokane scored on the resulting power play, then added a late empty netter.
Connor Chartier, Riley Whittingham and Blake Gal also scored for Spokane (40-25-2-0), which hasn’t lost at home to Everett in more than three years. Everett’s last victory at Spokane came on Feb. 24, 2010. Garret Hughson earned the win in goal with 22 saves.
Joshua Winquist scored twice and Brayden Low also scored for Everett (23-39-4-2), which lost ground in the race for the Western Conference’s final two playoff spots. Prince George beat Seattle 2-1 in a shootout Friday. Therefore, Everett fell three points behind seventh-place Seattle, while ninth-place Prince George moved within four points of the Tips. Everett has a crucial game at Seattle tonight.
Austin Lotz finished with 38 saves in net for Everett.
Everett scored the game’s first two goals and held a 3-2 lead late in the second period. However, the ice was tilting Spokane’s way, and the Chiefs tied it late in the second, Bertaggia getting his first of the game on the rebound at 17:51.
The third period then fell apart for Everett beginning with Winquist’s retaliation penalty. Tyler Sandhu’s delay-of-game penalty then gave the Chiefs a five-on-three, and Spokane capitalized at 6:30, Bertaggia with another rebound tally.
Everett managed to kill off another five-on-three, but with time winding down Dawson Leedahl took a checking-to-the-head penalty. Gal’s power wraparound beat Lotz at 17:47, giving the Chiefs a two-goal lead and essentially ending the game.
