MARYSVILLE -- Police in Marysville are looking for a suspect in connection with an assault and arson that occurred early Friday morning.

Officers responded to a 3:45 a.m. report of a disturbance in the 14500 block of 58th Drive.

A woman living in the home reported seeing her boyfriend's occasional employer run toward an open window and throw a bottle into the bedroom in her direction.

The bottle exploded, causing a piece of furniture to ignite, Marysville police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said.

The flames quickly were extinguished.

The woman ran to the front of the house where she was met by the suspect who slashed at her face several times with a box cutter, Lamoureux said.

When the suspect realized the blade of the box cutter was closed, he opened it and slashed at her stomach, according to police reports. He then cut her through her sweater, causing a superficial wound.

"The suspect then began throwing chopped wood and other things through the front window," Lamoureux said.

The victim's boyfriend, 34, was walking home from a neighbor's house when he heard the commotion, Lamoureux said.

When he confronted the man, the suspect got into his pickup truck and attempted to run him down, according to police reports.

The truck hit a concrete lamp post before speeding off.

Detectives later learned there had been an earlier dispute between the two men.

The suspect had left a voicemail message indicating he was looking for the boyfriend and "it wasn't going to be pretty when he found him," Lamoureux said.

While the investigation is continuing, it is important for people to know it was not a random attack, Lamoureux said.
