U.S. women figure skaters earn 3rd spot at Olympics

LONDON, Ontario — And now there will be three.

Ashley Wagner and Gracie Gold have done well enough at the World Figure Skating Championships to regain a third spot at the Sochi Olympics for the American women. They needed a combined placement of 13 or better and were first and second with five skaters still left Saturday night.

Having the maximum three spots at the Olympics and world championships used to be a birthright for the American women.

But they lost the third spot at the 2008 world championships and have never gotten it back. Wagner was most affected by it, missing the Vancouver Olympics after finishing third at the U.S. championships, and she made it her goal to earn it back.
