Prep Lax update: Mukilteo blanks Spanaway Lake for snow-shortened win

MUKILTEO — Melanie Rozzotti’s three goals led the Mukilteo to its second win of the season in a snow-shortened 8-0 girls high school girls varsity lacrosse victory over Spanaway Lake on Wednesday at Kamiak High School.

Midway through the second, with snow falling on the first day of spring, the game was called after officials determined the field was unplayable.

Anna Barton, Cheyenne McManus and Madison Rutledge each contributed two scores for Mukilteo in the victory. Goalkeeper Kennedy Newman recorded seven saves on defense.

Mukilteo got off to a quick start on offense, scoring seven of its eight goals in the first half. The inclement weather made the second half difficult for both teams, but Mukilteo was able to seal the victory with one more score before the game was called.

Newman’s strong defensive effort kept Spanaway Lake off the scoreboard in Wednesday’s matchup. Spanaway Lake goalkeeper Brianna Chargualaf recorded six saves.

Spanaway Lake (0-3-0) next faces Kennedy (3-0-0) in a 4 p.m. matchup, Monday, March 25 at Sunset Park. Mukilteo (2-1-0) next faces Lakeside (4-0-0) in a 4 p.m. matchup, Friday, March 22 at Lakeside High School.

The game was one of two high school lacrosse games in the North Sound interrupted by the early spring snow storm. At Glacier Peak High School the Eastside Catholic, Snohomish girls varsity game was called just after the half after snow covered the field rendering it unplayable.

Spring snow forces suspension of Snohomish, EC

SNOHOMISH — With Snohomish leading Eastside Catholic 7-4 at 24:27 of the second, the girls high school lacrosse game was suspended due to weather after snow blanked the field.

The game will be resumed later in the season.

The Snohomish, Eastside Catholic game was one of two high school lacrosse games in the North Sound interrupted by the early spring snow storm. At Kamiak High School in Mukilteo, the Spanaway Lake, Mukilteo girls varsity game was called in the second after snow covered the field rendering it unplayable. Mukilteo, which led 8-0 was awarded the win.

Big first drives Lakeside girls past Hale

SEATTLE — Amanda Roper scored a game-high five goals as the Lakeside earned its fourth straight girls lacrosse victory in a 19-4 defeat of Nathan Hale, Wednesday at Lower Summit East in Seattle.

Lakeside dominated the first half of play as they led 16-3 at halftime. Despite holding the Lions to just three goals the rest of the way, the Raiders only managed to score once in the second half.

Nathan Hale was led offensively by Corryn Wetzel, who netted two goals in the matchup. Midfielders Anna Boyle and Alex Kinoshita also scored one goal apiece.

On defense for Lakeside, goalkeeper Amanda Sheckles recorded a game-high eight saves and only allowed four goals. Nathan Hale goalkeeper Cali Ashmun recorded four saves on the day.

Lakeside (4-0-0) next faces Mukilteo (2-1-0) in a 4 p.m. matchup, Friday, March 22 at Lakeside High School. Nathan Hale (1-2-0) next faces Lake Tapps (1-2-0) in a 10:15 a.m. matchup, Saturday, March 23 at Lower Summit East.

Bainbridge topples Garfield for second straight win

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — Truman Flynn scored five goals as Bainbridge High School earned its second straight girls lacrosse victory in an 18-4 defeat of Garfield, Wednesday at Bainbridge Stadium.

The Spartans were balanced offensively in Wednesday’s matchup with four different players scoring at least three goals each.

Amy Willerford led all scorers with four goals, while Sonia Olson and Kyra Wortley each scored three for the Spartans. Goalkeeper Madeline Stevenson recorded three saves on defense.

The Bulldogs were led offensively by Annie Zwaschka, who scored three goals and also recorded an assist in the loss. Goalkeeper Kailee Dorland recorded three saves on defense.

Bainbridge Island (2-0-0) next faces Lake Sammamish (3-0-0) in a 5:45 p.m. matchup, Friday, March 22 at Marymoor Park Field #9. Garfield (1-3-0) next faces Roosevelt (0-3-0) in a 3:30 p.m. matchup, Monday, March 25 at Genesee Playfield.

Bethel powers past North Kitsap for first win

SPANAWAY — Sweets Battle netted a game-high seven goals as Bethel earned its first girls high school lacrosse win of the season by defeating North Kitsap 14-8, Wednesday at Art Crate Field in Spanaway.

Meghan Krissak scored five goals and recorded six ground balls on defense for Bethel. Shariah Hunt added two scores and five ground balls.

North Kitsap was led offensively by Paige Jablon and Sam Ryan, who each scored three goals in Wednesday’s loss. Brianna Berkhout and Dalis Sierra also added one goal apiece.

On defense for North Kitsap, Aisling O’Connor recorded eight saves. Bethel goalkeeper Hanna Elston also recorded eight saves.

Hawkins drives Everett past Shorecrest in boys lacrosse

EVERETT — Jared Hawkins delivered a season’s best seven goals and six ground balls as Everett advanced to 2-0 with a 21-3 boys high school lacrosse defeat of Shorecrest, Wednesday at Walter Hall Park in Everett.

Hawkins, a senior midfielder who opened the season with five goals in Everett’s win over Meadowdale, also had six groundballs on defense.

Everett opened scoring and rolled to a four-goal first and seven-goal second to take an 11-0 lead into the half. In the third, Everett again blanked the Highlanders with four more goals before adding another six in the fourth.

The Everett High School lacrosse club, which is made up of students from six Everett-area high schools, also had five goals and an assist from Jackson senior Ian Strong, four from Jackson sophomore Nathan Hanold and two each from Everett seniors Elijha Lindstrom and Cal Knapp.

Shorecrest’s goals, all in the fourth, came from Briggan Weaver, Riley O’Keefe and Ian Prieve.

Friday Harbor downs Meadowdale for second boys lacrosse win

LYNNWOOD — Led by two-goal performances by Jacob Justiniano, Sean Hill and Tate Brumsickle, Friday Harbor scored four unanswered goals in the first half on the way to an 8-5 boys high school lacrosse win, Wednesday at Lynnwood High School.

The win was the second of the season for Friday Harbor.

With a single goal in the first and three in the second, Friday Harbor built a 4-1 half-time lead then withstood a four-goal Meadowdale third to hang on for the win.

Jacob Jackson had 12 saves in goal for Friday Harbor, while Justin Holter had two goals, an assist and 10 ground balls to lead Meadowdale.

Burlington-Edison drops Monroe for first win

MONROE — Peter Isaacson’s hat trick led Burlington-Edison to its first boys high school lacrosse win of the season with a 7-6 defeat of Monroe, Wednesday at Monroe High School.

Burlington-Edison, made up of students from four Skagit Valley area high schools including Burlington-Edison, Mount Vernon, Sedro Wooley, Anacortes, eased out to a 2-1 lead in the first before matching single goals with Monroe in the second to hold a 3-2 lead at the half.

In the third Burlington-Edison again, outscored Monroe by a goal to extend its lead to 7-5.

In the end, Monroe managed just a single fourth-quarter goal but was never able to overcome Burlington-Edison’s early lead.

Collin Davis had 11 saves in goal for Burlington-Edison, while Matthew Morris and Hunter Day each had two goals for Monroe. Morris had 14 ground balls and Day grabbed six to lead Monroe’s defensive unit.

Pelkie powers Pups past Mead-Mt. Spokane

MEAD — James Pelkie scored five goals to lead Gonzaga Prep past Mead Mt. Spokane in boys high school lacrosse action, Wednesday at Mt. Spokane High School in Mead.

Powered by an eight-goal first and a 2-0 performance over Mead-Mt. Spokane 2-0 in the second the Bullpups raced to a 10-1 lead at the half.

Settling down in the second half, both squads matched single goals in the third and fourth to round out the game.

Redmond Groves, Cole Hubbard, Mitchell Sattler all got singles and Zachary Stewart recorded 15 saves for Mead-Mt. Spokane.

Lanning’s five leads Garfield past Roosevelt for 3-0 record

SEATTLE — Jackson Lanning scored five goals as Garfield advanced to 3-0 with a 12-6 boys high school lacrosse win over rival Roosevelt, Wednesday at Upper Genesee Park in Seattle.

With the win, the Bulldogs now hold-down first in the Boys Division II KingCo Conference.

After playing to a 1-1 tie in the first, Garfield scored three in the second to move out to a 4-2 half-time lead.

But it was a four-goal third that put the Bulldogs in the driver’s seat heading into the home stretch of the game.

In the fourth, Garfield added another four while the Roughriders scored three of their own to round-out the scoring.

Cedric Rhodes and Zeke Robinson were also atop the leaderboard for the Bulldogs with two goals apiece and Danny Strick had 10 saves in goal.

James Leroux led Roosevelt with five goals of his own while Eli Hall had an assist and 10 ground balls.

Morasch hits eventual winner as 2-0 Union upends Camas

CAMAS — Freshman Ben Morasch scored the go-ahead goal with just over three minutes to go in regulation as Union High School recorded its second boys high school lacrosse win with a 7-6 defeat of cross-town Camas, Wednesday at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas.

Approximately 500 spectators were in attendance at Doc Harris Stadium for the newly minted spring sports rivalry game between the two Camas schools.

With the score knotted at 6-6 and Union holding a man advantage, Morasch, a freshman at neighboring Mountain View High School, caught Camas flat-footed and made a left-side drive from behind the goal, firing a shot past Camas goaltender Hudson Fox to put Union up by one and in position to claim bragging rights between the Titans and Papermakers.

Fox, who prior to Wednesday’s game had just five minutes of experience in goal after replacing an injured Ollie Stanchfield earlier in the season, finished the night with 12 saves.

Camas took the reigns early, outscoring Union 2-1 in the first, before the Titans came back with three second-quarter scores to take a 4-3 lead at the half.

In the third, outscoring Camas again, Union added two more to take a 6-4 lead into the final quarter.

Camas came back in the fourth to knot the game at 6-6, before Morasch found his opportunity with just 3:09 remaining.

Sophomore Chandler Lindhorst led Union with three goals and three ground balls while goaltender Payton Summers, also a sophomore, led the defense with 17 saves in goal.

Sophomore midfielder Jack Lamey had three ground balls and six takeaways.

For Camas, sophomore midfielder Badley Stanchfield had two and Bryce Tabbut won five of 11 faceoffs.

Ben Morasch scored the go-ahead goal for Union at 3:09 of the fourth? man-up? drove from behind the goal (camas didn’t slide to meet him) drove from the left of the goaltender and put it in the upper right hand corner.

Olson’s hat trick powers Peninsula-Gig Harbor past Klahowya

GIG HARBOR — Cody Olson scored a hat trick as Peninsula-Gig Harbor advanced to their second win of the boys high school lacrosse season with a 9-5 defeat of visiting Klahowya, Wednesday at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor.

Peninsula-Gig Harbor used three fourth-quarter goals to put Klahoway away.

In the first Peninsula-Gig Harbor jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first than matched three goals with Klahowya for a 5-4 half-time lead. In the third the schools again matched goals with Peninsula-Gig Harbor taking a narrow 6-5 lead into the final quarter.

In the end it was all Peninsula-Gig Harbor.

Benz nets six as Skyline drops Bothell-Inglemoor for first win

SAMMAMISH — Ryan Benz scored six goals and delivered four assists as Skyline earned its first boys high school lacrosse win of the spring in a 14-4 defeat of Bothell-Inglemoor, Wednesday at Skyline High School in Sammamish.

Benz’s 10 points led all scorers. Other Skyline players to figure among the top scorers included Tristan Miller, Cannon Gardner and Tyler Johnston who all had two goals.

Skyline jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first and added three more in the second to build a 6-2 margin at the half. In the third, Head Coach Henry Valentine’s Spartans blanked Bothell-Inglemoor with five unanswered goals to extend its lead to 11-2.

In the end Bothell-Inglemoor would add two more and Skyline tacked on three in the fourth to close out the scoring.

Drew Tosaya led Bothell-Inglemoor with three goals.

Choate hits winner as Curtis boys upset Bainbridge

UNVIERSITY PLACE — Ryder Choate delivered the game winner with just over three minutes remaining in regulation as Curtis upset Bainbridge 8-7 in boys high school lacrosse action, Wednesday at Curtis High School in University Place.

Choate’s goal at 3:17 of the fourth was in only score of the night and fourth of the season.

On the road, Bainbridge struck first while holding the Vikings scoreless in the first for the early 1-0 lead. But Curtis came back with five scores in the second while holding Curtis to just three to take a 5-4 half-time lead.

After matching a pair of goals in the second, Curtis still maintained a one-goal margin at 7-6 going in the final quarter.

In the fourth, Bainbridge struck early knotting the contest at 7-7, before Choate had has game-winning chance.

Alex Brydson, Jayden Todd and Trevor Warren all had two goals for the Vikings, while Jake Knostman had four goals for the Spartans.

Mercer Island tames Woodinville

WOODINVILLE — Justin Rorem led all scorers with four goals as Mercer Island advanced to 3-0 with a 19-3 boys high school lacrosse win over Woodinville, Wednesday at Woodinville High School.

Rorem finished the night with six points including two assists and a ground ball.

The Islanders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first then poured on eight second-quarter scores while holding the falcons to just one to enter the break with a 10-1 lead.

Picking up where MI head coach Ian O’Hearn’s squad left off, the Islanders held Woodinville scoreless in the third while adding another eight to extend their lead to 18-1 going into the final quarter.

In the end, Woodinville tallied two goals in the fourth, while holding Mercer Island to just one to close out the game.
