Everett police were called to a business in the 8900 block of Evergreen Way around 4:20 a.m. after a burglary alarm was tripped.
When officers arrived, a 1992 white Chevrolet flatbed pickup was seen speeding off, officer Aaron Snell said.
"The suspect vehicle would not stop and officers did not pursue," Snell said. They followed, but kept back, in keeping with department policy about safety during pursuits.
About five minutes later, the pickup struck a vehicle at the intersection of 75th Street SE and Evergreen Way. That car caught fire and police officers quickly extinguished the flames, Snell said.
The woman driving the car received minor injuries.
The pickup kept going.
Several patrol officers converged on the area to search for the pickup.
A little after 4:30 a.m., an officer reported the pickup had rammed his patrol car in the 7400 block of Upper Ridge Road.
"The patrol car was damaged to the extent that it could not pursue the suspect vehicle," Snell said.
The officer was not injured.
Again, the pickup drove away.
Within minutes, a neighbor called 911 to report the pickup had crashed through a fence and was abandoned in their yard.
An hourlong search with a police dog failed to track down the driver and a passenger in the pickup.
Around 5:45 a.m., police received another 911 call of a possible vehicle theft in progress.
Another hourlong search with a police dog didn't lead to the suspects.
The driver of the pickup is described as white, heavyset and about 6 feet tall. He was wearing light-colored pants and a dark jacket.
The passenger's gender wasn't known. That person is believed to be about 5 feet, 5 inches tall and wore a dark beanie hat.
The pickup was impounded as evidence, Snell said.
The driver eventually could face several charges, including burglary, attempting to elude police and assault after ramming the police car, Snell said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call 911 or the Everett Police Department tip line at 425-257-8450.
