The UW-Bothell sophomore used caps that couldn't be recycled to create a piece of ocean-themed art for the city's upcoming "Sustainamania"celebration.
"I had a passion for art, and I've been taking art classes since high school," she said. "I thought it would be interesting to create art that is related to sustainability."
Liu, 20, graduated from Bothell High School in 2011. She plans to declare her college major in environmental science next year.
The art project was part of a class community-based learning project, she said.
Liu chose lids and caps as a medium because a lot of them end up in the ocean, she said.
"It chokes the fish and kills the wildlife and pollutes the water quality," she said.
Liu volunteered about 20 hours with the city's public works department to put everything together.
City staff were happy to work with Liu, said Sabrina Combs, Bothell's recycling and public services projects administrator.
"She does a great job," Combs said. "I love it because I think this is what volunteering can really be all about. Giving people experience in an office environment they haven't been in before and allowing them to experience it first-hand."
Liu's project is set to be displayed at Sustainamania, planned for June 1. For event details, go to http://sustainamania.org/.
