MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Brian Marty hit a key two-out, two-run single for Meadowdale in the bottom of the sixth inning to help the Mavericks take the lead and eventually beat Marysville Pilchuck 5-4.
The Tomahawks started their first baseball game as a Wesco 3A North team strong, leading 4-2 after 51/2 innings. But a couple of small mistakes paired with some clutch hitting by the Mavericks turned the game around.
Marysville Pilchuck opened with back-to-back singles, then advanced one runner with a hit-and-run. A hard-hit sacrifice fly by Jake Luton put the Tomahawks on the board.
“It was a very fast paced, well played game. (Marysville Pilchuck) came out very aggressive really early in the game,” said Meadowdale head coach Bill Hummel.
The Mavericks trailed 3-0 by the third, but managed to get a couple back in their half and stay in it. They almost tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Brian Marty hit a double and Ryan Wite moved him to third, but they couldn’t bring Marty in. The next inning a Chris Anderson RBI single made it 4-2.
That set the stage for a bottom of the sixth that wasn’t pretty, but still has to please Hummel going into league play.
Moises Valadez led off with an infield single, followed by a strike out and a hit batter. A passed ball put runners at second and third. Tyler McGuire hit an RBI single, but the next Maverick struck out, making it 4-3 with two-outs. Marty came to the plate and hit a single to score the tying and winning runs.
“(The Tomahawks) have been one of the stronger 4A teams in the North. … I feel very positive about getting a win,” said Hummel.
