SHORELINE — Jake Luton struck out nine, gave up just two hits and walked two over five innings for Marysville Pilchuck as the Tomahawks shut out Shorecrest 4-0 in a nonleague game on Friday afternoon.
Collin Holeman came in and retired the final six batters in order and struck out the side in the seventh to finish the game. The victory is Marysville Pilchuck’s first win as a member of the Wesco 3A North and is an encouraging sign for a team that is still getting its footing.
“There’s a lot of unknowns for us being in the 3A league now,” said Tomahawks head coach Kurt Koshelnik. “The 3A South is even more foreign. Since I’ve been here we haven’t played Shorecrest or Meadowdale.
“It’s early, it’s cold, we’re still trying to get a feel for where we’re at.”
While Koshelnik said he would still rather be 2-0, he doesn’t feel behind with the start the Tomahawks have had.
“Were going to slowly piece this thing together, I think were going to be OK.”
Offensively Nic Henry hit 2-for-3, Kacey Walker was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Jake Merrick came in at first base in the fifth and went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
A pick-off error and a bases-loaded walk helped Marysville Pilchuck’s offense get its first two runs. In the seventh a Luton double drove in Walker after he singled and stole second. A two-out single by Merrick scored Luton for the Tomahawks’ final insurance run.
