But Cascade responded to the challenge, ripping off nine runs over the next two innings to complete a stunning 9-7 come-from-behind win.
"I don't even know how to put it into words," said Cascade coach Kelly Ross about the comeback. "Everyone was really excited (after the final out) and it was great that they actually had to come from behind. They realized they can compete in a game regardless of the score and to never give up."
Paige Miller and Courtnie Gallardo each had two RBIs for the Bruins, with Gallardo hitting a two-run homer in the fifth to begin the Cascade rally.
Tiffany DeWayne went 2-4 with three runs scored and Rebecca Wright and Ashley Brooke knocked in two apiece for the Mavericks.
Meadowdale scored a single run in the first three innings before breaking it open in the fourth with four runs. Brooke had the big blow, a two-run double to make the score 6-0.
"(Meadowdale) had a few really clutch hits, which they strung together and they laid down a good bunt (in the fourth). They took advantage and maximized the situation." said Ross.
Meadowdale starter Alyssa Reuble had blanked the Bruins through the first four innings, but was replaced by sister Julia Reuble in the fifth. After a leadoff walk, Gallardo homered and Cascade would tack on two more runs to narrow the lead to 7-4.
The Bruins completed the comeback with five in the sixth. Freshman Whitney Harris had a key RBI single and Miller delivered a two-run double in the inning.
"It was something new and we had to decide how to respond," said Ross. "It took an instant for us to figure out how to respond, but once they realized the game was definitely not over, they pulled together as team and got the offense going."
An injury to centerfielder Aubrey Peterson did put a damper on the Bruins' win. Peterson twisted her knee running after a fly ball and had to be carried off the field in the second inning. Her status is still unknown according to Ross.
