State Senate plans to adopt Medicaid expansion

OLYMPIA -- A Republican-dominated coalition in the state Senate plans to adopt the Medicaid expansion that is part of President Barack Obama's health care law.
Republican Sen. Linda Evans Parlette said Wednesday the caucus plans to include new Medicaid money as part of a budget proposal expected to come out next week. Parlette said the caucus is exploring how to make sure the program is sustainable in the long-term and is hoping the federal government will be flexible about how to implement it.
Officials expect that the Medicaid expansion will save the state money, since the federal government will pick up the tab on new enrollees. Some Republicans have expressed concern that the federal government might not live up to its commitment in the long run, leaving states footing the bill years down the road.
