DUVALL — The Cedarcrest and Lakewood baseball teams seem to enjoy playing each other. So much so, that they don’t want to stop.
For the second straight game the two teams went into extra innings, with Cedarcrest once again coming out on top, defeating Lakewood 2-1 in 11 innings Wednesday afternoon at Cedarcrest High School.
Wednesday’s game followed a nine-inning battle between the two teams on Monday — which Cedarcrest won 5-3 — bringing the total number of innings Cedarcrest and Lakewood have played this week to 20.
“Both sides had good pitching. It was that way on Monday too, we played a (nine-inning game) against each other,” said Cedarcrest head coach Scott Goldsberry. “We seem to be pretty evenly matched. Just a good, hard-nosed old-school baseball game. … I’m real proud of my kids for coming through.”
The Red Wolves were once again led by freshman Blaine Wagner, who batted 3-for-6. The catcher, who had a game-tying RBI double in Monday’s game, hit the game-winning base hit with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, scoring Nick Bowersock from third.
Wagner also scored Cedarcrest’s first run of the game in the first inning.
“He’s come on the last few games,” Goldsberry said. “Maybe he was trying to find his way as a freshman the first couple games. The last few games he’s been hitting the ball pretty well. … For a freshman it’s pretty exciting. We’re really impressed with him.”
The two teams meet again on Friday and Goldsberry said it wouldn’t be a shock if the extra-innings trend continued.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if it went extra innings,” Goldsberry said. “They’re going to be ready to come get us.”
