EDMONDS — The game had gone long enough and Edmonds-Woodway had one of its hottest hitters coming to the plate.
So Warriors coach Mike Venable gave Brooklynn Bailey the green light to swing away.
Good idea. Bailey hit a scorching double over the third baseman’s head to score teammate Cassady Orstad from second base in the bottom of the 11th inning and lead Edmonds-Woodway to a 1-0 win over Kamiak on Friday.
“My philosophy is usually to bunt there,” Venable said, referring to the international-rules tiebreaker format, which places a runner on second base at the start of the inning beginning in the 10th inning of tied games. “But Brooklynn is hitting the ball so well I didn’t want to take the bat out of her hands.”
Bailey finished the game 3-for-5 from the plate, including two doubles.
The story of the day was the pitching duel between Edmonds-Woodway’s Katelynn Lafferty and Kamiak’s Angie McFall. The two pitchers went the distance and fought out of tough situations throughout the game to post zeroes in 21 straight innings until the bottom half of the 11th.
Lafferty used pinpoint control to subdue the Knights, scattering nine hits and striking out 12 in 11 scoreless innings. Kamiak’s best opportunity came in the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs. But Lafferty got the strikeout to end the threat.
“(Katelynn) really had her pitches working today,” Venable said. “Her control was excellent. She threw the right pitch at right time. Kamiak has some very dangerous-looking hitters.”
Until the 11th, McFall was Lafferty’s equal, scattering nine hits as well and striking out eight. McFall battled out of trouble in the bottom of the seventh with Warriors’ baserunners on second and third with one out. McFall got a E-W hitter to fouled off bunt attempt with two strikes and forced the next hitter to ground out to end the threat and send the game into extra innings.
