Stayin’ alive

The Tips defied all expectations, keeping their season alive with an unlikely 3-2 victory at Portland in Game 5 tonight.

It seemed like tonight’s game was academic after Portland’s 11-4 Game 4 thrashing Friday in Everett. But the Tips responded in the best possible manner, building a 3-0 lead and then hanging on late.

Josh Winquist scored another goal for Everett. Winquist has scored in every game in the series thus far. He keeps beating Portland goaltender Mac Carruth high to Carruth’s glove side. Also, Micheal Zipp had an assist for the Tips, meaning all four Everett 16-year-olds who have played in the series have registered at least one point. Come to think of it, all four of Everett’s 17-year-old rookies (Carson Stadnyk, Logan Aasman, Cole MacDonald, Mirco Mueller) have gotten on the scoresheet in the series, too. It’s been valuable experience for those youngsters.

Everett’s two playoff wins, by the way, are two more than the Tips had the past two years. Given the circumstances, and given that no one predicted Everett would still be playing at this point, this year’s playoffs have to be considered a success.

Portland’s lead in the best-of-seven series is now just 3-2. Game 6 in Monday in Everett.
