WENATCHEE — Work is ramping up this summer on a $100 million project to contain toxic wastes at an inactive mine in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest west of Lake Chelan.
The Wenatchee World reported about 200 workers will be hired and housed at Holden Village for the work at Holden mine.
The copper, zinc, gold and silver mine about 50 miles north of Chelan operated from 1938 to 1957. Mine tailings were left across 90 acres and acidic water drains into Railroad Creek.
The work includes relocating a half-mile of the creek away from the tailings, building a water treatment plant and stabilizing waste rock and tailings piles.
The Rio Tinto mining company is managing the work under oversight by the Forest Service, Environmental Protection Agency and state Ecology Department.
