EVERETT — After suffering a close loss to Sultan on Tuesday, the Archbishop Murphy girls softball team bounced back by beating Cascade Conference-leading Lakewood 5-1 on Wednesday.
Anna Whitehouse finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and Maureen Kelly had two hits and drove in a run, as the Wildcats won their third game in four tries.
“It’s nice beating the first place team,” said Archbishop Murphy coach Stephanie Harmon.
Both Whitehouse and Kelly played a part in Murphy’s three-run first inning. Gemma Miller started the scoring by singling in Alyson Matriotti. After Nicole Manuel scored on a wild pitch, Whitehouse’s base hit moved Miller to second and Kelly capped the inning with an RBI single.
That was all the support Wildcats pitcher Baylee Robertson needed. Robertson limited Lakewood (8-2 league, 9-3 overall) to just one run, a Jennica Larson RBI single in the fourth.
“Her pitching was just solid, she had great defense behind her tonight,” said Harmon. “She’s fast and consistent, just a great pitcher overall.”
The win helps keep the Wildcats (3-4, 3-6) on the edge of contention for one of the three 2A district tournament berths. Harmon believes the young Wildcat team, that lost its first five games of the season, is starting to mature.
“We have had so many close games, so many losses by one run,” said Harmon. “We’re starting five freshmen, we have such a young team, but there is so much talent that is starting to come around. Lakewood is a great team … (this result shows) we can play with the best of them, we’re coming around.”
