In the new Schack Art Center exhibit "The Creative World of Book Arts," books take on a different purpose -- books as works of art.
The exhibit opens April 18 with a catered reception from 5 to 8 p.m. at Schack, 2921 Hoyt Ave., Everett. The art work will be on view through May 28.
This exhibit goes the full gamut when it comes to book art, with disciplines on display that range from altered books and handmade papers to poetry, book binding, pop-up books and typography.
One project will be mixed-media artist Lisa Jones-Moore's altered book piece "Wabi Sabi Journal," which was created over a year as a round robin journal project.
Artists would contribute pages filled with their own mini-collages and then pass the journal to other artists until it eventually made its way back to JonesMoore as a completed art journal, according to press material.
Several other handmade books on display are from internationally known book artist and author Shereen LaPlantz. LaPlantz, who was known for her commercial how-to books including "The Art and Craft of Handmade Books," also produced up to 12 artists' books a year, which were featured in gallery exhibitions and museums across America and Europe.
Before she died in 2003, LaPlantz asked Rochelle Monner, fellow book artist and president of the nonprofit Puget Sound Book Artists, to continue teaching and sharing her vision about experimenting and creating handmade books, according to press material.
