For the Grizzlies, Eatmon is coming into his own at just the right time.
"It was actually his best game of the year," said Glacier Peak head coach Bob Blair. "In the first two (innings) his defense didn't help him out a lot, but he settled in and took control of the game. He was around the plate the whole night ... getting guys to swing at his pitches."
Eatmon was determined to finish the game. "He said 'Coach, I'm finishing this game.'" Blair said of Eatmon's reaction to him asking if he wanted to come out of the game. "It's nice to see him confident. ... Were getting close to the playoffs. Were looking for some guys that are going to carry us through."
The Grizzlies seem to be maturing at the plate as well. After Barnecut's triple -- the only extra base hit for the Grizzlies in the game -- they managed to score three more in the second and take the lead.
"(We) fed off that energy," said Blair. But not with more power. "It was a lot of seeing-eye single-type hits. Guys clutching up and putting the ball in play at the right time."
The win also clinched the three-game series with the Mavericks. The two teams are fighting for second place in the league behind undefeated Shorewood and Thursday night's victory pulled the Grizzlies even with Meadowdale in the win column.
But with just seven games left in the regular season, the Grizzlies are also starting to look at what they need to do to prepare for a playoff run.
"We want to get to the point where we are hitting consistently. Once you get into the playoffs, if you are good enough to get into districts, if you are fortunate to get into regionals you can get by with three or four pitchers. (That is what) we have. ... If we can minimize the mental mistakes I think we have the hitting and pitching that will carry us through."
