Barnard's bat leads Terrace baseball over Meadowdale

Hawks senior knocks in four runs to lead Terrace over Mavs

LYNNWOOD -- Behind Quintin Barnard's big day at the plate, Mountlake Terrace defeated Meadowdale 6-4 on Friday in a Wesco 3A South game to sweep the three-game series between the two squads and pull the Hawks within a game behind the Mavericks for third place.
Barnard provided much of the Hawks' offense in the game's first two innings by hitting an RBI double in the top of the first and a bases-loaded double the following inning that drove in three more. Barnard finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI on the afternoon.
"He is just a big, strong 18-year-old kid," said Mavericks head coach Bill Hummel on what he saw from Barnard in this week's series. "He has worked real hard to improve his body obviously. Obviously he's been in the weight room. Today he hit every fastball we threw at him and every offspeed pitch we threw at him and unfortunately for us that was with runners on base."
Meadowdale appeared to have figured out Mountlake Terrace starting pitcher Jason Shevenko through four innings, scoring all four of their runs in the third and fourth innings before reliever Conner Clausen came in and shut Meadowdale out over the game's final three.
"Our coming back a little bit was more about Shevenko struggling on the mound more than anything," Hummel said. "Jason was around the strike zone early on ... once we had some rain he had some control problems. But in the fifth they put in Clausen and he just did a great job at throwing strikes."
Meadowdale starting pitcher Moises Valedez threw six solid innings for the Mavs and went 2-for-2 with two singles in the loss.
