Chancellor wrote "It's a great day today" on Twitter this morning, though the Tweet has since been deleted.
Chancellor, 25, had one year left on the rookie deal he signed after being picked in the fifth-round of the 2010 draft, and Pete Carroll and John Schneider have made no secret of the fact that they were hoping to get a deal done this offseason to lock the hard-hitting safety up before he hit free agency.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the deal is worth $28 million over four years with $17 million in guaranteed money.
Chancellor, who learned under Lawyer Milloy while playing in a reserve role as a rookie, stepped into the starting lineup in 2011 and had a huge impact, intercepting four passes and serving as an intimidating presence in the middle of the field. He played in the Pro Bowl that year, and had another 101 tackles last season. Just an importantly, Chancellor has emerged as one of the leaders in Seattle's locker room.
Locking up Chancellor with a long-term deal is likely the first of many moves the Seahawks are hoping to make in coming years. Cornerback Richard Sherman and safety Earl Thomas are both under contract through 2014, so the Seahawks will likely be looking to get both done next year. Thomas is eligible for an extension this year if the Seahawks wanted to sign him even earlier because he signed under the old collective bargaining agreement, but Sherman cannot be re-signed until next year.
