Lockdown continues at penitentiary in Walla Walla
Spokeswoman Shari Hall said there were no substantial injuries and inmates stopped fighting on their own.
Spokesman Chad Lewis said investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fighting that involved about 50 offenders. Thirty-eight inmates have been placed in segregation for their involvement.
The four units of the prison’s West Complex house 760 high-security inmates. Lewis said Monday that the two units involved in the fights will remain on lockdown for at least the next 48 hours. That affects about 380 inmates.
Offenders in the other two West Complex units will be allowed to participate in limited activities.
The prison also houses minimum and intensive management prisoners among its 2,200 inmates.
