COUPEVILLE — A Whidbey Island family farmer says thefts have forced her to close a popular produce stand that has operated on the honor system.
Dorothy Mueller of Bell’s Farm told KOMO-TV that she’s left it up to her customers to leave the right amount of money for the products they take.
She said she believes most people are honest but the dishonest few have made operating her stand harder than it’s been in 15 years.
She said just before she shut down, she got hit twice in three days, with thieves taking as much as $40 worth of produce at a time. That was enough to force her to close the stand.
She said she plans to reopen at some point.
