The Silvertips are back in action this week as the bantam draft takes place Thursday in Calgary. This year’s draft disperses 1998-born players from western Canada and the western U.S. to the league’s 22 teams.
Based on my records, Everett has a pretty complete list of picks this year. The Tips have their own first- and second-round picks, Moose Jaw’s third, Tri-City’s fourth, two fifths (their own and Brandon’s), and no sixth. This is as complete a collection as Everett’s had since 2009.
Everett’s first-round pick is seventh overall. I’ve been told this year’s draft is deep at the top, so the Tips should have a chance at a true impact player with their first rounder. The players taken seventh overall who played in the league this season included Kamloops center Colin Smith (2008), Tri-City winger Connor Rankin (2009), Victoria defenseman Keegan Kanzig (2010) and Everett’s own Ty Mappin (2011).
Everett’s picks are slotted in at fourth overall in each subsequent round. These players won’t be eligible to play full-time in the WHL until the 2014-15 season.
